Youth director wanted

Diocesan News & Publications

The Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta seeks a director of youth ministries.

The Cathedral of St. Philip is home to one of the largest parishes of the Episcopal Church. It has almost 7000 active members and associates. Situated prominently in Buckhead, one of Atlanta's classic neighborhoods, the cathedral is called to minister to a faithful and complex parish community, to the energetic city of Atlanta, and to the world outside city, state and country borders. The cathedral family represents a wide variety of personalities, backgrounds, and theological perspectives. The cathedral proclaims itself a church for all people; we seek to shine the light of Christ in the world.
In all areas of its ministry, particularly its youth program, the cathedral is called to express simultaneously both the excellence of a seasoned classical tradition and the popular excitement of new and contemporary Christianity.

The youth program of the cathedral represents one of its most vibrant and dedicated ministries, and mirrors the energy and variety of the parish as a whole, involving youth, their families and adult sponsors drawn from the congregation. The successful director of youth ministries should be not only committed to the formation of youth, but also blessed with the gifts and graces to interact with the wider cathedral membership.

The director of youth ministries will be a leader in the cathedral community -- a difficult, complex, and extremely satisfying undertaking. Reporting directly to the Canon for Education, the director will be primarily responsible for fostering a youth community (beginning with 7th grade) involving education, spiritual formation, social interaction and community involvement, mentored by program sponsors and directly involving youth families.

Working with the Canon for Education, the director will:
· Develop and recruit members for the Parents Council and the Youth Sponsor Team
· Work with the Parents Council to develop goals, a budget and a calendar for the youth programs
· Create and manage communications with the youth and their families (requiring at least weekly emails, maintenance of the youth website, and production of monthly calendars.)
Develop, organize and lead the following activities:
· Annually: Two out-of-town weekend youth retreats, one ski trip, one week-long summer mission trip, a Parish Weekend (Retreat) youth program, Youth Sunday, and similar events throughout the year
· Weekly: Sunday youth education/formation classes, Sunday evening fellowship events and midweek Bible Studies
· Periodically: Family youth worship and social events, outreach efforts and youth community service events
· Organize and direct youth confirmation program
· Facilitate youth involvement and service in broader parish ministries such as –
Special events
· Annual Homeless Requiem (community meal and memorial service for Atlanta's homeless)
· Week of Wonder (cathedral children's vacation bible school)
