Loading...The Diocese of Kentucky's School of Ministry recently celebrated the graduation of four members of its class of 2011, the second class to complete the two years of study for lay and diaconal ministry. The graduates come from parishes in metropolitan Louisville and Bowling Green: Gary England, a postulant for the diaconate
and a member of St. Francis in the Fields Church, Harrods Creek; Dru Kemp, also a postulant for the diaconate and a member of Church of the Advent, Louisville; Laurie Joyce, a member of Christ Church, Bowling Green; and Cam Norman, a member of St. Andrew’s Church, Louisville.
The graduation was held Saturday afternoon on Saturday, June 11, at Gulick Lodge at All Saints Camp and Conference Center near Leitchfield, where the school meets once a month during the program year.
The Rev. Delinda Buie, a deacon at Resurrection church and faculty member with the school, told the graduates and their guests in her homily that she is certain that if asked if they were ready to serve the Lord, the four would say “only with God’s help” but that those who know them would say, “’Yes Lord, they are ready and able.”
Servant ministry, she said, takes a sense of responsibility and willingness to serve, and each of these graduates have a “long history of serving.” Servant ministry also requires one to serve in Jesus’s name, encouraging others to know God’s desire to them and to give guidance and courage. “You teach constantly in practical ways,” she told them, adding that like the energizing words and sayings of Paul, “you energize the very air we breath. “Each one of you are so very able to bring people to transforming love,” she repeated. “You are able, and we are grateful. We thank God for you.”
The Rev. Paul Collins, rector of St. Alban’s Church in Louisville, was celebrant of the service, and the Rev. Canon Joan Smith commissioned the graduates during the graduation ceremony.
