On Dec. 10, Christ Church, Bowling Green, will be rocking to the music, words and images of a U2charist, produced by an ecumenical group of youths and adults. Many of its creators were unfamiliar with liturgical practices when they began, some were unchurched, but all were—and are—committed to supporting the U.N. Millennium Development Goals.
Planning began after the Rev. Jim Quigley, associate rector of Christ Episcopal Church, and the Rev. Ben Kickerts, a minister at Broadway United Methodist Church, separately approached youth leaders at Parker Bennett Community Center about shared ministry. Quigley said both churches wanted “to expose our kids to kids they normally didn’t get exposed and so their collaboration began.” About 40 youth and adults have pooled their talents and resources to stage the Bono-inspired service, which weaves together liturgical practice and rock music.

The youths, assisted by the adults, have been meeting over six Wednesday evenings, planning and creating, through music, art, technology, spoken word and movement, a worship experience wholly their own. Following Bono’s example, they are dedicated to persuading worshippers to support the United Nations’ campaign “to reduce human suffering globally through development by the year 2015.”
The service will begin at 5:30 p.m. (CST) with music and a visual presentation setting the mood and goal of the service.
