Loading...Mary Abrams, Mary Jane Cherry and Edward Lane III were ordained as deacons during a service at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Louisville.
Abrams, a member of St. James Church, has been assigned to serve Resurrection Church in Louisville; Cherry, a member of St. Matthew's, will be at St. Andrew's Church in Louisville; and Lane, a member of St. Peter's Church in Louisville, will be serving St. John's Congregation at Fort Knox.
They are the first of five candidates for ordination to the diaconate who also were the first graduates of the diocese's new School of Ministry, a two-year program established to prepare its students for lay and diaconal ministries. The other candidates awaiting ordination are Daniel Kuol, a member of the Sudanese congregation at Church of the Resurrection in Louisville, and Richard Paxton, a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Paducah. Paxton will be ordained at Grace on May 2. Kuol, who is in the Sudan at present, will be ordained this summer.
Unlike "transitional" deacons awaiting ordination to the priesthood, this group of new deacons are the first "vocational" deacons to be ordained since the ordination of the Rev. Dr. Rose Bogal-Allbritten nearly six years ago.
