THEOLOGIANS CHALLENGE POPULAR PORTRAYALS OF THE APOCALYPSE

Prominent theologians, including Jürgen Moltmann, challenge the apocalyptic vision of the future being popularized today, which they contend is a massive and dangerous distortion of the biblical picture of God’s purpose that promotes violence and extremism, during Trinity Institute’s 37th National Theological Conference at historic Trinity Church, Broadway and Wall Street, on January 22, 23 and 24! .  Citing the Bible, these scholars portray a hopeful vision of the world to come, as they discuss "God’s Unfinished Future: Why It Matters Now."

Conference highlights include:

 
January 22 at 6:30pm: James Carroll, author and Boston Globe columnist, leads the opening Eucharist.
January 23 at 2:00pm and January 24 at 9:00am: Jürgen Moltmann, emeritus professor of theology at Tübingen University in Tübingen, Germany, champions an alternative to contemporary renderings of apocalypticism and instead offers a powerful story in which no aspect of God’s good creation is abandoned.
January 23 at 9:30 am: Rev. Barbara R. Rossing, Th.D., professor of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, traces the development of the prevailing narrative and proposes a reading of the text that is both more life giving and more faithful to Christian tradition.
January 24 at 1:30 pm: Rev. Professor Peter J. Gomes, best-selling author, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in The Memorial Church at Harvard, reflects on how a vision of God’s future has served as a source of hope and direction in the African-American struggle of liberation.
