St. Thomas, Louisville, celebrates 100th with series of events

St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Louisville is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year with special dinners, concerts, picnics and other events throughout the year. A chili luncheon and bake-off will be held this month and a fundraiser dinner and a barbershop quartet concert in April. Other upcoming events at the church, located at 9616 Westport Road, will include a Mass on the Grass with bluegrass music concert and picnic, an ice cream social, and a concert by “The Galileans” of Southeast Christian Church. The chili luncheon and bake-off, with prizes for the best red chili and best white chili, will be Sunday, Feb.18, following the 10 a.m. (EST) worship service. A cookie and cake contest also will be held. The cost will be $5 each for the chili and baked item.

On Saturday, April 14, the Under the Hill Gang and the St. Thomas Bridge Club will sponsor a Centennial Fundraiser Dinner, beginning at 6 p.m. (EST). The dinner will be followed by a concert by "A Leap of Faith," barbershop quartet that includes St. Thomas member George Boyd. Tickets for the dinner and concert are $25 for one adult and $45 for two adults. For ticket information, call Evelyn Mudd at 425-4406.

The yearlong celebration was kicked off on Dec. 3 with a Service of Holy Eucharist, during which a birthday cake was presented and Helen Wetherton, our oldest member, blew out the birthday candle. A birthday luncheon followed the service. In January, the Feast of Lights Service was presented, which was written by Lanier Siewertsen, another St. Thomas member.
