Loading..."State of Uniqueness," a unique career development program for those in search of employment, will be offered again at Calvary Episcopal Church in Louisville. The eight-week "career shaping" program, first held in Spring 2009, is more like a process of discernment and life actualization that "considers the person as a whole: body, mind and spirit," say program organizers.
Guided by a career development professional, Gionatan Surrenti, participants will undertake three major tasks: 1) assess their professional and personal skills, talents and values; 2) create a career plan and strategies to attract the best opportunity for personal and professional growth; and 3) evaluate and grow their ideas into a business or profession concept.
Callie Hausman, director of Calvary's Community and Christian Formation program, said the first program, taught by Surrenti and another career counselors, was remarkably successful. Eight people participated, meeting weekly on Sunday afternoons, and "everybody who was looking for a job ended up getting a job because of the help of the counselors," she said.
This Fall's sessions will meet during the week on Tuesday mornings from 7 to 8:30 a.m. (ET) Sept. 21 through Nov. 16 at Calvary, 821 S. Fourth Street. The class size is limited to 12 participants, and pre-registration must be done by Sept. 12.
Calvary's congregation has long devoted its resources to serving those in downtown Louisville, running a clothing closet and food pantry. The numbers served by the church have doubled, Hausman said. "Because there is such a need, and we are a downtown location, Jonathan [Erdman, Calvary's new rector] and I are meeting with several people from Catholic Ministries and an interfaith group who have downtown career programs to find out what are the needs." Calvary's program is unlike other career programs being offered in churches, she said.
"Ours is a little different ... we have a focus on career building and how to prepare to look for a job, but we also we look at the whole person: heart, body mind and soul. And, using scripture, we go through a discernment process where they can look at not just jobs A, B or C, but also identify the true gifts that they have to bring to employment."
