Loading...Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, a nationally and internationally renowned scholar on Jewish-Christian relations, will be the speaker at a series of four lectures, entitled "Jesus, the Misunderstood Jew," to be held in Louisville during October.
The lecture series is sponsored by the Louisville Interfaith Forum, consisting of several Louisville area religious organizations: Highland Baptist Church, Interfaith Paths to Peace, Second Presbyterian Church, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, St. Paul's Episcopal Church (New Albany) and The Temple.
Levine is a professor of New Testament studies at Vanderbilt University. Her most recent books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus, The Historical Jesus in Context and the 14-volume series, Feminist Companions to the New Testament and Early Christian Writings. Lecture organizers say Levine is "a self-described 'Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Christian divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt.'"
The lectures will be given at the following times and locations:
- "Jesus and Judaism: Why the Connection Matters," 7:30 p.m. (EDT), Oct. 29, The Temple, 5101 U.S. 42.
- "How Jews and Christians Read Scripture Differently," 10 a.m. Oct. 30, Second Presbyterian Church, 3701 Old Brownsboro Road;
- "Hearing the Parables of Jesus through Jewish Ears," 1 p.m. Oct. 30, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 330 N. Hubbards Lane;
- "The Present and Future of Jewish-Christian Relations," 2 p.m. Oct. 31, Highland Baptist Church, 1101 Cherokee Road.
