Jefferts Schori was elected presiding bishop by her peers in the House of Bishops on June 18, 2006 during General Convention in Columbus, Ohio, and her election was overwhelmingly approved by the House of Deputies the same day. Her investiture was Nov. 4.
Bishop Ted Gulick announced the plans for her visit during the annual spring retreat of Trustees and Council April 27-28 at All Saints' Episcopal Conference Center in Leitchfield. He had initially invited Jefferts Schori to attend the 2008 diocesan convention, but he said the May visit will be more productive.
"We will have her for three days, and her visit won't be encumbered by convention. It's better this way," he said. In addition to preaching, she also will be involved in confirmations and baptisms, and she will have access to clergy and lay leadership, according to the bishop. He also noted that he is consulting with the Department of Mission and Evangelism in order to plan her visit. It is hoped, he said, that the focus on mission will lead to "some real careful thinking about our responsibilities to be really generous in this world about the Millennium Development Goals."
The Trustees and Council retreat was Gulick's first meeting with the diocesan leaders since he returned earlier this spring from the House of Bishop's meeting, which he described as the best he has attended in 14 years because of the presiding bishop's leadership style.
The retreat was also the first time Trustees and Council had met since January and since the election of new trustees. They tackled a full business agenda during the retreat, which included a report about the Louisville Metro government's suit against the diocese challenging its claim to River Road property and another report regarding increasing construction costs for the new dining hall and residence inn at the diocese's All Saints' Episcopal Conference Center in Leitchfield.
