Relief assistance to the people of Haiti, devastated by an earthquake yesterday (Tuesday), is being requested by The Episcopal Church's presiding bishop, and Bishop Ted Gulick, who said our diocese has a historic tie with Haiti, is urging Kentucky Episcopalians to respond.
The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori sent out the following statement today (Wednesday), urging support in the form of prayers and donations to Episcopal Relief and Development:
"The people of Haiti have suffered a devastating earthquake, and it is already clear that many have died and many more are injured. Even under “normal” circumstances, Haiti struggles to care for her 9 million people. The nation is the poorest in the western hemisphere, and this latest disaster will set back many recent efforts at development. I urge your prayers for those who have died, been injured, and are searching for loved ones – and I urge your concrete and immediate prayers in the form of contributions to Episcopal Relief & Development, who are already working with the Diocese of Haiti to send aid where it is most needed."
The Rev. Jim Trimble, the diocesan ERD coordinator, has also sent out an appeal for donations to our clergy and lay leaders. Contributions to ERD, he said, will go to immediate recovery efforts. To make a donation, visit https://www.er-d.org/donate-select.php
In urging members of the diocese to give to the Haitian relief effort, Bishop Ted Gulick noted that the Dioceses of Kentucky and Haiti were once companion dioceses during Bishop Gresham Marmion's episcopacy and the need there now is great. He said he personally contributed to ERD this morning, noting how easy it is use donate online through their Web site. "And," he added "the good thing is that the money gets there today."
