Loading...Recent, impending births of grandchildren have All Saints’ staff wondering
A few members on the staff at All Saints' Conference Center, no longer in childbearing mode, like to think that our love for our families and our examples of integrity and joy in parenting (and, yes, maybe even some cajoling) are promoting us to grand-parenthood. While we'd like to think that, we are also wondering if something else is at play (perhaps it's the air we breathe?) here in the hills of Leitchfield.
Two months ago, Ruby Bigelow -- our lead housekeeper -- was overjoyed with the birth of Abigail Baker. Just a day or two ago she was showing off pictures of this now two-month-old infant, weighing in at 13 pounds. Greg Premo, executive director, has pictures of his 6 foot tall, 13-year-old grandson and his 11-year-old athletic brother, but he is getting very excited about the prospects of showing off pictures of his new grandchild in waiting. His daughter Jeanette Sassatelli and husband John are expecting their first child around March 22, a date of considerable significance for the Premo family. Greg's wife Polly passed a year ago on March 26, so the birth, so close to that date, will become a great celebration of life.
Marmion Hall renovation progresses
Thanks to the dedication and ingenuity of All Saints’ employees Tim Probus and Dolan Hunt, Marmion Hall, home to thousands of meals for campers and adults since 1955, is being rescued from the deterioration of aging and neglect. “We don't have much money to work with so we are doing the best we can,” said Probus. “We found six boxes of new one-foot square floor tile in the barn that will work out nicely on the floor of the kitchen. We have put cement in some floor cracks almost level with the tile ... we have finished the crack seals with white grout, which sure looks a lot better than cement color.” In addition, they removed all of the ceiling tile, which had become parabolic rather than flat as they hung in the ceiling, and are attempting to have the tiles flattened by spring.
After removing several stored carpets, they also discovered additional missing floor tiles and deterioration. In addition, the staff has repaired a black hole in the ceiling that was left after the kitchen grill hood was removed. Probus intends on carrying the makeover right into the old office, which is used as a nurse station occasionally.The
Bigger news in waiting
Through the renovation work, the staff discovered a very unusual stone found in a closet. The staff already has gathered folklore and rumors about its origins and how it came to be at All Saints. They hope to report about the discovery in an upcoming issue.
