Loading...Photographers of all skill levels will have the opportunity to learn from acclaimed instructors, including veteran National Geographic photographer Sam Abell May 8-13 during the 10th annual Kanuga Photography Retreat.
Sponsored by Kanuga Conferences, the retreat includes workshops on using photography for outreach, seeing light, seeing the unknown, documentary photography in natural light and seeing the holy through a common sense approach to digital photography.
Instructors include noted photographers Kathy Eyster of Missoula, Mont.; Lydia Goetze of Southwest Harbor, Maine; Jon Kral of Boone, N.C.; Beth Reynolds of Northfield, Mass.; and Robin Smith of Columbia, S.C.
Abell will bring his experience and expertise to the retreat for an evening presentation and one-on-one feedback sessions with participants.
A renowned documentary photographer, Abell, a graduate of the University of Kentucky, has worked with the National Geographic Society since 1970 and has photographed more than 20 articles on various cultural and wilderness subjects. He also has lectured on photography and exhibited his images to audiences throughout the world. His books include Contemplative Gardens, The Inward Garden, Australia and The Life of a Photograph.
Launched 2002, the retreat offers hands-on lessons, camaraderie and refreshment. Class size is limited to allow individual instruction. Students pick one instructor to study with for the entire week, with evening programs planned for conference-wide participation, allowing students to learn from other instructors.
Thom Burden of Northfield, Mass., cofounder of the socially responsive, educational company Basecamp Photo, is coordinating the retreat. The Rev. Janet Tarbox, an Episcopal priest and avid photographer from Edgefield, S.C., will serve as chaplain.
