Loading...Referring to last Sunday's gospel reading about the wedding at Cana, Bishop Ted Gulick gave two compelling reasons for donating (and donating again and again lavishly) to Haitian relief efforts.
The miracle at Cana occurred because of the cooperation between Jesus and the actions of the faithful servants, especially Mary's ability to see what was needed at that time, he said. As we can see on our televisions, the need in Haiti is unimaginably great and our financial support is the best way right now to help bring relief to the devastated island.
Not so readily apparent, he noted that our diocese's Bishop Gresham Marmion literally risked his life on behalf of the Diocese of Haiti (now the largest in The Episcopal Church in number of members). Marmion was sent to Haiti by Presiding Bishop John Hines to oversee a diocesan election during the dictatorship of Papa Doc Duvalier. The people of our diocese, said Gulick, need to remember and be good stewards of Marmion's courageous investment.
