Loading...The Diocese of Kentucky will be among regional hosts presenting a webcast of the 37th Trinity Institute National Theological Conference Jan. 22-24 at Christ Church Cathedral in Louisville.
This year’s conference, “God’s Unfinished Future: Why It Matters Now,” will offer participants “essential practical theology in the exploration of Christianity’s vision of God’s future” as they examine the personal, political and environmental impact of “ultimate visions,” according to the conference flyer.
Elaborating on the theme, the institute’s Web site (//www.trinitywallstreet.org/institute) indicates that apocalypticism, especially as it is presented in popular works such as the Left Behind series, underlies the conference theme. Organizers note “the claim of this conference is that this vision is a massive and dangerous distortion of the biblical picture of God’s purpose. This apocalypticism, in our tradition and others, supports a politics of polarization, violence, and extremism.”
Keynote speakers will be Jürgen Moltmann, professor emeritus, Tübingen University; Barbara Rossing, professor of New Testament, Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago; Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals, Pusey Minister in The Memorial Church, Harvard University; and James Carroll, author and preacher during the opening Eucharist.
Conference sessions will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22; 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23; and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24. (Times given are for the EST zone.)
