Loading...The congregation of Christ Church Cathedral, which began a ministry of prayer for those affected by violence in metropolitan Louisville last year, will have a special service of remembrance at 4 p.m. Sunday, January 30.
"The cathedral wanted to bear witness to and pray for those affected by violence, especially homicides, in our city," cathedral Dean Mark Bourlakas said. "We keep track of murders that, unfortunately, happen almost every week. We had 62 murders last year, and three already this year."
Joined by Interfaith Paths to Peace, which has offices in the cathedral's Diocesan House, the cathedral maintains a prayer table with votive candles lit for murder victims and a list of their names and suggestions for prayer.
Before the candles and prayer list are changed with the beginning of a new year, Bourlakas said the congregation wanted to have a service to remember those on the 2010 list and all who have been affected by violence. Participants in the service will include Bishop Terry Allen White. (Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City, Mo., where White was the dean before coming to Kentucky, was in fact the model for the Louisville ministry, said Bourlakas.) Also expected to participate are Christopher 2X, a community activist who works with families of murder victims; the mother of a daughter who was murdered last year; and a member of the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department.
