Loading...The long anticipated arrival of the four nominees for bishop finally came Thursday afternoon with the the last of them arriving a little after 4:30 p.m. at the Louisville International Airport. Accompanied by their wives, they traveled to Kentucky from Arizona, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Texas.
The nominees and their wives are the Revs. David Allen and Catherine Boyd of Austin, Texas; the Very Rev. John Paul and Sharon Downey of Erie, Pa.; the Very Rev. W. Nicholas and Karen Knisely of Phoenix, Ariz.; and the Very Rev. Terry and Linda Sue White of Kansas City, Mo. For the first leg of their travels to the western part of the diocese, they were driven to All Saints' Episcopal Center, located on Rough River Lake near Leitchfield, where they spent the night. Their drivers for the weekend are Transition Committee members, the Rev. Mary Abrams of Louisville, the Rev. Amy Coultas of Louisville, Laurie Joyce of Bowling Green and the Rev. Richard Paxton of Paducah.
As the pictures will show, All Saints' staff members welcomed the visitors with a reception and a dining hall cheerfully decorated with spring flowers. What you do not see in pictures are the bacon-wrapped chicken livers that won the praises of several guests or the steakand asparagus dinner.
Friday morning the group will continue to travel the Western Kentucky Parkway to Paducah, where they will tour the Seamen's Church Institute before having lunch at Grace Episcopal Church. They will then travel to Murray, where they will visit the Angel's Attic Thrift Store, begun a few years ago by members of St. John's Episcopal Church to help fund Angel's Clinic, which offers free health care to the uninsured. Today the thrift store makes a profit of about $170,000, all of which goes to the medical clinic.
Friday's travels will conclude in Hopkinsville at another Grace Episcopal Church for the first walkabout session that evening. Details about that walkabout and the second one at Christ Church Cathedral in Louisville may be found here.
